Why I Started Tracking Every Cent on Generator Maintenance

I manage the maintenance budget for a mid-sized industrial facility. Over the past 6 years, we've spent about $180,000 on Cummins generator parts and service — diesel standby units and a couple of natural gas generators for our office campus. Take our MERV 1 air filters. Genuine Cummins air filter for a QSK19: $44.50 (as of January 2025, per our supplier). Third-party alternative with same dimensions and MERV rating: $18.75. Looks like a no-brainer — save 58%. Except that cheaper filter clogged 40% faster, causing a 3% drop in fuel efficiency and requiring replacement twice as often.   • For critical standby generators (hospitals, data centers, emergency power):
    Always buy genuine. The TCO is lower, the warranty stays intact, and your clients will notice. Don't cheap out on MERV 1 air filters, oil filters, or alternators.
  • For non-critical or infrequently used portable generators:
    You might get away with high-quality third-party parts for items like air filters. But test them. Use a multimeter to check alternator output under load — and log the results.
  • When a PCC.net code pops up:
    Use an OEM controller or sensor. The diagnostic capability relies on original firmware. I learned this the hard way.
  • One exception:
    If you're in a pinch and the only filter available is a generic one, use it temporarily — but plan to replace it with genuine within the service interval. That's what I do now.

Bottom line: the genuine vs. third-party debate isn't about brand loyalty. It's about total cost plus risk. And for most commercial and industrial Cummins generator owners, the math favors OEM — especially when you factor in the peace of mind.
