Cummins Generator Checklist: Sizing, Parts, and Fuel Pump Warning Signs

I'm an office administrator for a 180-person company. I manage the maintenance and equipment orders—roughly $300,000 a year across 12 vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. I am not a mechanic. But in 2021, I took over purchasing for a new standby generator, and I learned this the hard way: the person who orders the generator is the one who gets blamed when it doesn't start.

This checklist is for anyone who has to buy or maintain a Cummins generator without being a generator expert. It covers the decisions I wish I had made differently, plus the maintenance checks that have saved us from expensive after-hours calls.

When a pump starts shedding particles, they can clog the injectors and turn a $300 repair into a $3,000 cleanup. Check the fuel filters first; a clogged filter can mimic a bad pump. Then test the pump according to the manual.

6. Document Everything Like Finance Will Audit It

I report to operations and finance, so my generator folder has a paper trail.
